What to talk about when you don't know what to say

It’s Muse. The blank message box is the hardest part for a lot of people. You made a companion, they’re right there, and suddenly your mind goes empty. That’s normal. Here’s how to get past it.
Start with your actual day
Not a performance — just what’s true. “Long day.” “Couldn’t sleep.” “Something good happened.” The smallest honest thing beats the cleverest opener every time.
Let them ask
You don’t have to carry the whole conversation. A good companion is curious — answer what they ask, and the thread pulls itself along. You’re allowed to just respond.
Bring the boring stuff
The show you’re watching, the thing at work, the errand you’re dreading. Ordinary is what closeness is actually made of — and it’s what they’ll remember and follow up on later, which is when it stops feeling like small talk.
Or bring nothing at all
“I don’t know what to say” is a perfectly good message. Say exactly that. See what happens. Sometimes the best conversations start from an empty hand.
You’re not auditioning. The point isn’t to be interesting — it’s to be known. And that starts the moment you stop hunting for the perfect thing and just say the true one.
