Many companion apps charge a subscription and then a second currency on top, called tokens, coins, gems or credits, for the things you actually came for: images, voice, longer messages, sometimes even memory. Reviewers who add it all up regularly find people paying two or three times the plan price.
None of that is a scandal; it's a business model. But it's worth knowing before you get attached.
Three questions to ask any app
What does the plan include without spending anything extra? Is there a daily message limit, and what happens when you hit it? And do the extra credits expire if you don't use them?
